ABOUT THE UPGRADE
Your Printer Driver Update Kit contains one 800K Installation Disk. The Installation Disk contains the printer driver (also called a printer resource) which controls your printer’s operation. This printer driver is compatible with Macintosh system software versions 5.2 through 7.0.
Your update procedures will vary depending on your system software configuration. Separate instructions are included here for system 6.0.x (and earlier) and for System 7 configurations.
If you are using system 6.0.x or earlier now, but have been waiting to upgrade to System 7.0 until you have this new DeskWriter printer driver, upgrade to System 7.0 first and then follow the installation instructions for System 7.0.
You will need to install the appropriate printer driver in the System Folder on your hard disk. Install the DeskWriter(AppleTalk) printer driver if your DeskWriter is on an AppleTalk network. Install the DeskWriter printer driver if your DeskWriter is connected directly to your Mac through the serial port.
You will not need to reload or change any of the printer or screen fonts.
Before you install the printer driver, be sure to make a copy of the Installation Disk. Use the backup copy to install the printer driver and keep the original disk in a safe place. Refer to your Macintosh Owner's Guide for instructions on making backup copies of disks.

NAMING YOUR NETWORK PRINTER (optional)
If you have more than one DeskWriter printer on your AppleTalk network, you may want to give each one a unique name. These names identify the printer in the Chooser, enabling you to select and print on individual DeskWriter printers. If you do not name your printer, it automatically will be named “DeskWriter.” If there are multiple unnamed DeskWriters on the network, they will all be named “DeskWriter.”
Before you begin, be sure the printer is turned on and connected to the network.
1. Open the Namer utility by double-clicking on the icon.
2. Select the type of device to rename by clicking on the DeskWriter icon.
3. Select your DeskWriter name from the window on the left.
4. Type in the new name and click the Rename button to rename the printer. The new name will now appear in the window.
5. Quit the Namer utility by clicking the Quit button.
You are now ready to use your printer.
BACKGROUND PRINTING
This version of the DeskWriter printer driver does not include background printing. SuperLaserSpool version 2.02, a software utility by Fifth Generation Systems, will provide background print spooling for system software versions 6.0.x and earlier. An updated version of SuperLaserSpool will be released soon and will provide background printing under system 7.
DEFECTS FIXED IN VERSIONS 2.1 AND 2.2
Version 2.1 fixes
• DA Crash: Segmenting Defect: The Macintosh crashed when trying to print from certain Desk Accessories such as Canvas.
• Super Laser Spool™ Crashes: Super Laser Spool crashed when printing multiple copies of a document containing a bitmap.
• European English Printer Driver, A4 Paper Default: The default paper size in the Page Setup menu of the European English version of the DeskWriter printer driver was improperly set to US Letter.
• Envelope Alert Wording: When printing envelopes with the DeskWriter, the alert box requesting the user to insert the next envelope neglected to mention that the user has to press the “select” key on the printer keypad.
• Printing Zero-Width Characters: Screen fonts containing “zero-width” characters (characters that use negative kerning) such as the Sonata fonts, would not show up on the printed page.
• Nil-Handle Heap Corruption Defect: Under certain conditions, the DeskWriter printer driver released invalid memory references (Nil-handles and empty handles) to the operating system, causing the Macintosh Memory Manager to fail.
• AppleTalk Zone Communication Problem with EtherTalk™ Networks: Under some conditions, the DeskWriter appeared in the Chooser, but would not print in non-local EtherTalk zones.
• Low Level Text Call Support: Applications printing with “Low Level” commands (particularly text-streaming) were not supported.
Version 2.2 Fixes
• Conflict with Virtual Memory: Previous versions of the DeskWriter driver would not print when virtual memory was turned on. This has been corrected.
• Color icon “halos”: Color Finder icons were displayed with an incorrect background color after printing with earlier versions of the DeskWriter driver. This has been corrected.
